Overview

ChatGPT needs no introduction — it's the model that put AI in everyone's hands. GPT-5.5 is OpenAI's current flagship, launched April 23, 2026. GPT-5.5 Instant became the new default for ChatGPT on May 5, 2026, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant.

The headline win is reliability: GPT-5.5 Instant produces 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims than GPT-5.3 Instant on high-stakes prompts (medicine, law, finance). Responses are also tighter — OpenAI explicitly cut back on "gratuitous emojis" and rambling structure, so you get more signal per token.

GPT-5.5 retains native computer use from the 5.4 line: it can control your desktop directly — clicking, typing, navigating software using screenshots and mouse/keyboard input. Combined with persistent multi-round web search and tool search, it's a legitimate end-to-end agent for long workflows.

GPT-5.5 ships with a 1M token context window and 128K max output. API pricing is $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, with batch and flex rates available at half that. Pro and Enterprise subscribers also get GPT-5.5 Pro for the heaviest reasoning workloads. The Free and Go tiers may have limited or no access depending on OpenAI's availability settings.

Pro Prompts

Strategic Planning

Plan a complete marketing strategy for a SaaS launch, including contingencies for each stage. Start with the riskiest assumptions.

Computer Use

Open the Q4 sales spreadsheet, filter for deals over $50K, export a summary CSV, and draft an executive email highlighting the top 5 deals by revenue.

Research Synthesis

Search for the latest developments in [field] from the past month. Cross-reference at least 5 sources. Highlight where sources disagree and rate your confidence in each finding.

Code Review

Review this pull request for security vulnerabilities, performance issues, and adherence to our coding standards. Suggest specific fixes for each issue found.

06

Limitations

Hallucinations down 52.5% from GPT-5.3 Instant on high-stakes prompts — but not zero. Remaining errors still tend to land with confidence.

Overactive safety guardrails can block legitimate professional requests (false positives)

Overkill for simple tasks — too resource-heavy and expensive for basic queries

Multi-step reasoning can lose track of earlier assumptions across complex chains

$5/$30 per million tokens isn't the cheapest tier — Grok 4.3 and Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite undercut it heavily for cost-sensitive workloads

Free and Go tiers may have limited or no full GPT-5.5 access depending on OpenAI's availability settings — Plus ($20/mo) is the safe entry point

OpenAI plans to introduce ads in the free and Go tiers
